Maties Esport is proud to announce its participation in the inaugural Varsity Esport competition, a first-of-its-kind national tournament for South African universities. Representing Stellenbosch University, Maties has entered 35 students for Split 1, competing across three major titles: Valorant, FC25, and Rocket League.
This marks a major milestone for esports at Maties, as the club continues to grow its presence and reputation on the national stage. The Varsity Esport competition provides a professional platform for student gamers to showcase their skills, connect with the broader esports community, and represent their institutions in high-stakes matches.
Split 1 is currently underway, with Maties teams already making waves in early rounds. Split 2 will take place later this year, offering teams another opportunity to qualify for the finals. The top squads from both splits will go head-to-head at the Varsity Esport National Finals, set to take place this November at the Rage Expo in Johannesburg—South Africa’s premier gaming and tech event.
“Being part of the very first Varsity Esport tournament is a huge moment for Maties Esport and the entire university,” says Sport Manager Yaseen Gangat.
“This competition puts student esports in the national spotlight, and we’re excited to represent Stellenbosch with pride and passion,” he expressed.
With momentum building and more students getting involved, Maties Esport is setting the standard for what competitive university gaming can look like in South Africa.
