Maties Sport Bursary Application

  • Prospective students apply electronically for admission to SU between 1 April and 31 July per calendar year.
  • Each prospective student receives a provisional student number that must be used for all future communications.
  • Prospective students can apply for a sport bursary only after they have applied at SU (provisional student number as proof). These applications are managed via the individual sporting code offices and club managers. Applications can be completed via Maties Sport website: https://sport.sun.ac.za/
  • The admission to SU degree programme is confirmed once SU receives confirmation of successful Grade 12 marks within the academic requirements of each individual degree programme/faculty.
  • Confirmation of admission can be delayed due to Faculties having to process increased applications, and ensuring placement policies are applied correctly and fairly.
  • Enrolment to the degree programme is confirmed during the last 2 weeks of January and first week of February of each calendar year when students register for their degree programme.
  • This happens every year of study and is based on a normal SU calendar program, unless there are any disruptions to the calendar program.
  • All new Sport Bursary applications are reviewed once the above-mentioned registration has taken place as well as in terms of the existing bursary allocations.
  • The aim of each Sport Club is to confirm the successful allocations by end of March and to communicate it to all recipients.
  • Each sport code has specific requirements to meet with regards to maximum and minimum allocations per year and no application has a guarantee of allocation.

Bursary approvals take place during April each year and is communicated to each individual recipient via the sport code head coach & club manager.

  • To accept the bursary the student-athlete is required to sign the Bursary Agreement (also attached to the application form).
  • Once the HP unit receives the signed agreement, the bursary amount is paid directly into the student account. This payment will be processed during April & May, or in line with the SU budget allocation timeline per annum.
  • There are no full-cost bursary allocations. The bursary serves to financially assist to the costs charged to a student’s SU student account.
  • The retention of a Sport Bursary is assessed on a year-to-year basis within the performance and academic requirements as indicated in the Bursary Agreement. All bursaries are assessed and allocated on a year-to-year basis. There is no guarantee of a bursary awarded for more than one year at a time.
  • All queries with regards to HP Sport Bursary must be always directed to the Sport Club Manager.
  • Important to note that there are various bursaries across faculties and departments as well as Government support programmes such as NSFAS to apply for at Stellenbosch University and that a Sport Bursary is not the only option to apply for.
