Maties Rugby History
The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the second oldest rugby club in South Africa and was founded in 1875 (?) The headquarters of the Maties is The Danie Craven Stadium at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch. Apart from the Craven Stadium which can accommodate 17 000 spectators, the club utilises eight additional rugby fields for training and matches. 24 teams participate in the Campus Rugby League. Five Maties club teams participate in the leagues of the WP Rugby Football Union (including our Women’s team) and we have a Men’s and Women’s 7s team that compete annually in the USSA competition. With 31 teams and just over 900 registered rugby players that participate in league matches, Maties Rugby is most probably one of the biggest competitive rugby clubs in the world. Through history the Rugby Club has produced several rugby legends, such as Paul Roos, AF Markötter and Danie Craven. Maties Rugby has produced 184 Springboks with Jordan Hendrikse, Edwill van der Merwe, Ben-Jason Dixon and Andre-Hugo Venter the latest to join this illustrious group after making their Springbok debuts in 2024.
