All Stars win the inaugural Maties Netball Regional League

The inaugural Maties Netball Regional League final concluded with a thrilling display of skill and determination, marking a significant milestone in the development of competitive netball in the Western Cape. Held at the Coetzenburg Centre in Stellenbosch, the final showcased the culmination of a season that brought together top teams from across the region.

 

A New Era in Regional Netball

Launched in early 2025, the Maties Netball Regional League aimed to bridge the gap between district and provincial-level netball, providing a structured platform for player development and team excellence. The league featured five powerhouse teams: Maties 1, Maties 2, Paarl, UWC, and an all-new All-Star team. Fully funded by Maties Netball, the league’s inaugural season set the stage for future expansions, with plans to include more top teams based on district league performances in the coming years.

 

The Final Showdown

The final match was a closely contested battle between Maties 1 and the All-Star Team. Both sides demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork, reflecting the high standards set throughout the league. In a game that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, the All-Star team with a number of Maties Netball alumni emerged victorious, clinching the championship title with a narrow win. The final score was 44-38, highlighting the intense competition and the league’s success in fostering a high level of play.

 

Player Highlights

Standout performances came from both teams, with All-Star goal shooter, Sian Moore, leading the attack with precision shooting while Maties 1 captain Syntiche Kabuya showcased her defensive prowess. The bronze medal was clinched by Paarl who beat UWC 48-27. Both the gold and bronze matches were a testament to the depth of talent within the region and the league’s role in providing a platform for these athletes to shine.

 

Looking Ahead

The success of the inaugural season has set a high benchmark for future editions of the Maties Netball Regional League. With plans for expansion and the inclusion of more teams, the league is poised to become a cornerstone of competitive netball in the Western Cape. The commitment to player development and the promotion of netball at the grassroots level ensures a bright future for the sport in the region.

Maties Netball Sport Manager, Charlé Swart expressed her excitement about the future of the tournament: “From the very first centre pass we could feel something special building. The league has fast‑tracked the growth of our student‑athletes, re‑energised alumni engagement and shown that there is real appetite for high‑performance netball in the Western Cape. We are already working on expanding team participation for 2026, and I have no doubt that the standard will climb even higher.”
