The Varsity Esports season is officially underway, and Maties Esports has kicked things off with a powerful statement. With 12 teams entered and 35 students representing the university in the first split of the tournament, it’s clear that Maties is all in—and it’s already paying off.
Now in the third week of fixtures, Maties Esports boasts the most wins of any university across the first two weeks. The energy, commitment, and raw talent of our players have been on full display, and the results speak for themselves.
The tournament itself is no small feat. With several semi-pro and professional players competing across titles like Valorant, Rocket League, and FC25, the level of competition is extremely high. That makes Maties’ early success even more impressive.
One of the major standouts so far has been our Valorant SU Odin team, showing consistent dominance in every match. Not far behind, all three of our Rocket League teams remain undefeated, each match highlighting their strong teamwork and fast-paced coordination. Meanwhile, in FC25, three out of five players remain unbeaten, showcasing our versatility across multiple gaming titles. It could have easily been 4 players being unbeaten but unfortunately our two top ranked players Vihape and Njabulo had to play against each other in the last round.
Looking ahead, we’re just as excited about what’s to come. Our all-female Valorant team made an impressive debut despite a narrow loss to a strong Varsity College side. Their performance showed promise, grit, and a bright future for female representation in competitive gaming.
As we gear up for this week’s fixtures, there’s a quiet confidence among the teams and staff. The road ahead is long, but if the early signs are anything to go by, Maties Esports is set for a season to remember.
