It is with deep sorrow that Maties Sport and Maties Rugby Club mourns the passing of one of our own, Dawie Snyman, on 14 August 2025—a former Maties stalwart, Springbok legend, and revered coach.
Dawie’s rugby journey began at Stellenbosch University, where he proudly represented Maties from 1970 to 1977. His performances in the maroon jersey laid the foundation for a distinguished career that would leave a lasting mark on South African rugby.
Remarkably, Dawie earned selection for the Springboks’ 1971 tour to Australia before even making his provincial debut for Western Province later that same year—a testament to his extraordinary talent.
He made his Test debut in 1972 against England at Ellis Park, and went on to earn 10 Test caps, excelling at both fly-half and fullback. Across 22 Springbok appearances, he scored 86 points through a try, four penalties, two drop goals, and a conversion.
While his playing career established his reputation, Dawie’s greatest impact came as a coach. He guided Western Province to five consecutive Currie Cup titles (1982–1986) and shared another in 1989—securing a golden era for the union.
Dawie also gave back to his alma mater as a coach, club manager, and mentor, generously sharing his knowledge and raising the standard of all those around him.
To Pam, Louise, Patse, Pam Jr., and Danielle—we stand with you. May you find strength in the knowledge that Dawie’s legacy lives on, not only in record books or trophy cabinets, but in the corridors of the Danie Craven stadium where we will carry forward his teachings with pride and humility.
