Be a legend and support Maties Rugby’s growing legacy through our special 150-year bursary campaign … and leave your legacy mark in a plaque at the Danie Craven Stadium! Donors will be recognised as legends in their own right with a named plaque in Platinum, Gold and Silver categories.
It costs R200 000 a year to carry a high-performance Maties Rugby student-athlete through academics and the rigorous training and playing regime that requires professional support.
The campaign aims to raise R15-million through 150 bursary donations of R100 000 each.
Maties Rugby is the largest competitive club in the southern hemisphere and the second oldest in South Africa with a 150-year legacy of producing national heroes on and off the field.
It began one day in 1875 when a group of young men calling themselves the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club turned up to play a “new” ball game on Die Braak in the centre of town.
Today Maties Rugby Club has 900 players in 36 teams; a home at historic Coetzenburg with the iconic Danie Craven Stadium and 6 fields; 12x winners of the National Club Championships and 5x winners of Varsity Cup; a Koshuis Rugby tradition that now has 800 players; and 182 Springboks.
To sustain what has been achieved and to continue to thrive in excellence, we need financial support to attract the best young talent in the country through academic/sporting bursaries.
Maties Rugby is – and always has been – an enriching student experience at Stellenbosch University, developing graduates with teamwork ethics, discipline and leadership attributes.
As we celebrate 150 years of this remarkable Club in 2025, we ask your help to enable us to continue inspiring a legacy of legends.
