Time to check in with Maties Sport Alumnus: Gemma Haywood

As a student-athlete at Stellenbosch University, you learn how to be independent and take responsibility for your actions.

“As a Matie, I learned very quickly how to be independent. I had to learn about tasks like budgeting and time management. I also had to learn how to make friends with strangers,” recalls Gemma Haywood, a former Maties Water Polo player.

“I really enjoyed my time as a Matie. I had a proper student experience in my six years as a student in Stellenbosch. It’s a special town. You can walk everywhere. I love the vibe of the town. It’s almost like a little piece of Europe in Africa.”

A memory that stands out for Gemma from her first year at Stellenbosch is that as water polo players, they were thrown right into the deep end.

“Several first-year students wanted to play water polo, but there were only a limited number of places available in the first team. So, it was a big challenge to make the group. Five of us made the team and became friends straight away…and we are still friends today.”

According to Gemma, several individuals had influenced the culture of the Maties Water Polo Club over the years. However, she singled out the role of Sarah Kravitz (formerly Harris) played.

“Sarah completely changed our game and culture as a coach while she was here. She made a huge difference to the players, the team and the club. Her influence is still visible today.”

Gemma currently owns her own health and wellness business in Stellenbosch.

“I am so grateful to be able to work for myself. I have learned a lot from others, and it was during the Covid pandemic that I realised that I wanted to do my own thing. It was a passion project before it became a reality. It has been five years now and I enjoy every moment. I do what I love. So, it never feels like work.

Gemma’s business is called GEM.

“It is my passion to help people because I want to change their mindset about exercise, fitness and body strength. I would love to open another branch of GEM to reach more people.”

Being a student at Stellenbosch University is a privilege and Gemma believes that anyone thinking of coming to study here should seize the opportunity.

“The town is proverbially built around the University. There is always something happening. The town is full of life.”
